Dear Valued Customer:
Thank you for your interest in the actions United Airlines is taking to change the way it does business to keep pace with the changing airline industry.
Over the past year, the entire travel industry has faced a number of serious challenges as a result of the general economic slowdown and the tragic events of September 11, 2001.ý United has been working hard to bring its costs in line with reduced revenues, and while we have made some progress, it recently became clear that it was necessary to restructure our business through a section of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code called ýChapter 11ý.ý Chapter 11 permits companies to reorganize under court supervision as they continue to operate.ý It is different from ýbankruptcyý as it is known in many countries.ý During a Chapter 11 proceeding, United remains in control of its operations, which continue while the company develops a plan of reorganization.ý
This filing does not mean that United is going out of business. On the contrary, this action enables United to make the changes necessary to secure its future while continuing to meet customersý needs.ý During our reorganization, you should know:
- Our top priority continues to be providing you with safe, reliable and high-quality service.
- United Airlines and United Express (operated by regional airline partners) flights continue to operate.ý
- Reservations, ticketing and refunds will continue as usual.
- Mileage Plus members will continue to be able to accrue and redeem mileage as always.
- United remains an integral part of the Star Alliance, offering our customers the most comprehensive route network and convenient, integrated service around the globe.
- Red Carpet Clubs, First Class lounges and Arrivals by United facilities remain open and ready to serve members.
- You can continue to book your future travel with United with confidence.
The decision to take this course of action was not an easy one.ý But it will ultimately enable United to remain competitive and better serve you for the long term. ý We are committed to remaining one of the worldýs premier airlines, providing our customers with access to Unitedýs and Star Allianceýs extensive global route network, convenient schedules and services that make your experience more enjoyable.ý Ultimately, this process will enable us to do that more efficiently and effectively.ý
We understand that you have choices when it comes to travel, and on behalf of the United Airlines employees worldwide, thank you for your continued support.ý For the latest information, I invite you to visit www.united.com.
Sincerely,

Glenn F. Tilton
